Why choose Elemental Health Services for your School?

Elemental Health Services is dedicated to enhancing the health and wellbeing of primary school-aged children across New South Wales. We offer accessible, school-based screening and education programs that fill critical gaps in early detection and intervention for developmental, physical, and emotional health issues. Each child receives a detailed report, outlining their results and recommending any necessary further action.

Comprehensive Insights

Our mission is to deliver a comprehensive snapshot of each child’s development and identify common health concerns relevant to this age group.

Convenience for Families

Each screening takes approximately 20 to 40 minutes per child and is conducted conveniently within the school setting, eliminating the need for parents to take time off or remove children from class for assessments.

Clear Recommendations

This initial screening provides a detailed report, indicating whether further specialised evaluation is recommended for your child.

Peace of mind for parents and reduced family strain

We understand the challenges parents face. Our convenient, school-based health screenings are designed to save you time and money, giving you confidence in your child's health journey. Feel comfortable knowing we are here to support your family.

Addressing Parents' Biggest Concerns

Our comprehensive, school-based health screening provides a holistic snapshot of a child’s development and wellbeing. While not diagnostic, our assessments are designed to flag early signs of potential concerns and guide families towards appropriate next steps. We help answer questions about:

  • Full health check by a qualified healthcare professional.
  • Growth & development insights including physical, neurological, and sensory indicators.
  • Immediate feedback and tailored recommendations.
  • Referrals to specialists (e.g., audiologists, optometrists) if needed.

Our Seamless Screening Process

Getting your child screened is simple and streamlined.

The school schedules a date for our mobile screening service, and parents complete consent forms for their child’s participation. On the day, our mobile team arrives at the school and sets up in the hall. Two qualified technicians then guide each student individually through a comprehensive hearing screen, which includes:

1. Body Composition & Physical Development

We assess height, weight, BMI, fat mass, bone density, and hydration, alongside strength, flexibility, and balance. These indicators help track developmental progress and flag potential concerns.

2. Vital Signs

Using standard medical equipment, we check blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, temperature, and blood glucose. Early detection of abnormal vitals can help identify chronic conditions like asthma or diabetes and reduce school absenteeism.

3. Lung Function & Spirometry

We evaluate your child’s lung health usinga spirometer and stethoscope:

  • Auscultation: Detects abnormal lung sounds (e.g., asthma, croup, flu-like illnesses)
  • Spirometry: Measures lung strength and capacity using:
    • FEV₁ (Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second)
    • FVC (Forced Vital Capacity)
    • FEV₁/FVC Ratio

4. Neurological & Behavioral Screening

Through physical, verbal, auditory, and visual tasks, we assess motor and sensory function, reflexes, coordination, mood, and behavior. This helps identify early signs of neurodevelopmental conditions such as ADHD, autism, or anxiety.

5. Sensory & Motor Function

We screen for Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) and sensory processing challenges, which often co-occur with learning and behavioral difficulties. Early identification supports timely intervention and better academic and social outcomes.

6. Visual Assessment

We conduct a basic vision screening to identify potential visual concerns:

  • Snellen chart for visual acuity
  • Visual field and pupil response checks
  • Colour vision screening with Ishihara plates

7. Hearing Assessment

Using a simple audiogram test, we assess your child’s ability to hear different pitches and volumes.

Why it Matters

It is essential to understand that this is a non-diagnostic screening carried out in a dynamic setting. Any concerns that arise will be communicated to parents. This screening is intended as an early detection tool to help guide subsequent assessment and investigation by qualified healthcare providers.
